The story of Krabat the sorbic sorcerer is merely a horror and suspense tale then a fairy tale. Its the story of a joung lad who searches for a job and comes to the watermill at the Black Water river near Hoyerswerda. He doesn't know, that everybody in this mill is cursed and doomed to die, and that their souls are sold to the devil himself. He wants merely a job for money and bread. The offer by the master miller, to learn some spells to make the hard days work easier, seems to be just a nice addition - till the first of the crew dies under mysterious circumstances. Krabat tries to escape from the black mill, but the curse binds him and he can't find a way out of the forrest. Every year one dies and another new candidate comes to the mill. And when the third year ends, Krabat gets aware that he is the next to die...

Do I need to tell, that I always loved this story? Guess not.

Hey, glad you like it. Actually there was a pretty lovely animated TV movie about Krabat. And everythime another one steped through the mills door and applied to a job they showed how a spider catched a fly. Thats why I put the web there. Every component in this pic is related to the story. The mill - well obviously. The forrest - not difficult to guess also. The 8 ravens - this are the colleagues of Krabat after body changing into ravens. The web - s.o. And the cross is actually the "cross of the violent death". Every easter Krabat hat to stay beond such a cross and when the night was almost done and the girls where going to get the holy water, he had to take a splint from this cross and draw a pentagram with its ash on his forehead. It was the renewing spell of their overnatural powers.

Unfortunately it was an East-German TV thingy and made it probably never out of the country. I don't know if the book by Otfried Preussler ever has been translated to English, but its worth to look for it. Its a small book for children, even the story is very dark. Exspecially the part where Krabat finds out that the mill not always uses wheat for the job, but also bones and teeth...
